Undersized Urbanite Contest: Apocalypse Scene: Hastily unfinished.. but done for now *Photos***Loading time**

Good Sunday folks!

I unfortunately had to just stop working on the Undersized Urbanite contest. Although I did want to do more detail work with the build I decided it is as done as it is going to get for now.

So the entire build was done with scraps..I do like refurbishing my leftovers... but for this build particularly, new items were not suitable.

Foam Board: Building and broken cement pieces, mattress.
A type of homemade cement paste: Paint, sand, glue
Acrylic paints
Fake plant clippings at the bottom of my Bin O' Plenty: Fauna
The dabs of Rail Road foam: Moss and lichen
Plastic sheeting from consumer packaging: Broken windows
Wire clippings: Power line, Barrel BBQ
Jewelry jump rings and chain: Pull chain for floor seal.
Clay failures and basket failed weaves..
Cardboard tube and tape: BBQ Drum
Tongue depressors: Shelving
Free Printies from Jens Printable's
Reduced images from web.

Whatever else I had on my floor that was about to be vacuumed up..but I wanted to make sure I couldn't re-use..because its all good stuff... I ...I ..I am a craft hoarder...I admit it.

So the idea for this whole build was on the backs of a project I have wanted to do since I first got into creating miniatures scenes. Apocalyptic scenery..

***********I had to just quickly snap some shots here, they wont be very pretty but that is fine since the goal was to participate and I did !*********

As you will see this is a decaying building in which a resident decided to try to shelter in place but as you know......
time makes fools of us all......Enjoy!

  5. Oh wow! This has to be one of the most terribly clever ideas ever :D I love it!! I think the newspapers and signs add that extra charm to it. You couldn't have done a better job, I think it's just perfect the way it is. Anything else would be overkill. But seriously, how do you come up with this stuff, hahaha.... you are truly amazingly talented, Jane! :D And to think you made everything with stuff found around the house?!?! Speachless....
Oh, and btw, I think that the judges are crazy if they don't award you first place....

  6. Another wonderful piece, my friend. Your creativity to create this with "leftovers" is magnificent. It has such an abandoned and rustic feel. I love the rusted look you created with paint. Another tutorial???? Pretty please?

  7. And you made all of this from scratch! OMG it's just amazing! I am always floored but what you accomplish. I don't know how on Earth one can have this much imagination to make things like this. I hope you win!

  8. Hi Jane, Wow!!!!!!! You've created a creepy futuristic scene that has given me the shivers! Great job! Love how you used all of the recycled scraps and such. The fern and moss growing in the corner is a favorite, as are the Keep Calm poster and the newspapers. Well done, Jane, well done! Such a creative mind you have! xo Jennifer

  14. You've had an unusual vision and how you've built this into a miniature scene is simply stunning... what a fantastic project and so well done in every way, your aging skills are impressive. All the details with the newspapers, posters etc. are perfectly chosen... enough for a statement and to emphasize the scene and the message, but not too much. Oh, that poor guy... I'm so glad my skeletons lead a better life in my witch towers... ;O) But back to being serious - I really liked the base floor with nature winning back the place. I think you managed to add loads of hope to a hopeless situation. Good luck for the contest, I have no doubt your contribution will be successful.

    Hugs

    1. Thank you for your thoughtful views and time looking into this piece! Don't feel too bad for the tenant he died peacefully in his sleep ;P

I am glad you appreciate the nature aspect growing in the scene, I always think this way with life.. we are but a part of this world..a blip on the radar of time and our humility should be that we are not that powerful... as nature always has it way.

I will let you know I sang REMs song the entire build!!! It was very fitting!

  15. Hi Jane, you know what?! I am a craft hoarder too.... and not just craft, books, old stuff, toys, clothes and trash that might be useful one day.. yes I might drown in stuff one day, but I just cant throw anything away =) But last weekend I gave some cloths to a second hand store, so I'm starting to bend my hoarding-rules here ;)
I'm glad you saved all this stuff, it really was useful! You have done such a wonderful job! Amazing details! The moss looks so realistic! And I most say it is a bit creepy! Gives me the shivers just looking at it! =)
    You are just brilliant! =)

I did hope it reflected a common theme with apocalyptic stories and scenes, since the hunker down and shelter in place idea has been a constant in disaster occurrences.

But I guess there is only so long you can do that before time takes over ;)

  22. Jane.... you are a true artist... and you create amazing pieces of pure art. While looking at your pictures I was struck with emotion. Curiosity, sadness... and even a bit of fear. Honestly Jane... you amaze and inspire me with every bit of work you do. I could rave about all the stunning details... the rust work... the aging... the "dirt"... but the scene as a whole hit me in the gut... I am standing in ovation right now Jane... Artists invoke emotion... lady you are soooooo an Artist!

  26. Hi Jane! I know that this has been a top secret type project for you and I am Very Proud of you for not only entering the contest, getting your work finished but also for such an Inspirational and Creative Piece! What I LOVE most are the rocks and the boarded up windows, and the way that you have constructed the cemented ground floor wasteland. In the midst of all the abandoned decay are the evidences of the will to survive. Life re-emerges through the cracks and in the corners of the main floor. What a story! Brava!
But then, upstairs we can see the skeletal remains of some poor soul would wasn't able to duck for cover quick enough. His bones have faded nearly to the color of the mattress he is lying on. He no doubt held on for as long as he could, living in such a solitary and lonely room. It appears that life will go on with or without him and that eventually the earth will be reclaiming it all once again. Every detail that you have incorporated into this piece is genuine and has a real significance which makes a vital contribution to the whole story. I am blown away Jane and applaud you LOUDLY! :D

    1. Thanks so much Elizabeth! I do love how your eye sees this build, I did want to tell a tale with the effects and I am happy that it has come across.

We always strive to live long lives, ever reaching for longevity but what if that longevity was mirrored with solitude and loss at a massive scale, to be one of the lucky ones in this scenario, lucky to have passed or lucky to have lived?

      Hugs! Jane
